We are pleased to announce the full lineup of works by John Cage being performed on February 20th during the Avant Music Festival. It should be a truly amazing evening of performances.
One4 for Solo Drummer will be performed by percussionist and experimental composer Jude Traxler to open the concert.
The beautiful String Quartet in Four Parts, performed by MIVOS quartet, shows Cage’s stunning sense of melody and structure that were so vital to his early work.
In a slight break with tradition, Randy Gibson has developed a version of One9 for specially tuned Toy Organ that mimics the sound of the original Shō – he will be joined by Jude Traxler on conch shells to perform Two3
Closing the concert will be a monumental performance of Songbooks with solos from the Concert for Piano and Orchestra performed by members of loadbang with Megan Schubert and presented with videos of Solo for Voice 19 by Randy Gibson and Ana Baer-Carrillo originally created for John Cage at 95 as well as i-Ching based video lighting created by Oscar Henriquez.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for this and all the wonderful events taking place at Wild Project as part of the Avant Music Festival
Avant Music Festival : Music of John Cage takes place at 8PM on Saturday February 20th at Wild Project, 195 East 3rd Street.

I’m on my way to Europe for the month of July. I’ll be visiting London, Berlin, and Calvi dell’Umbria where I will be in residency at the Art Monastery and creating a new piece as a part of their Labirinto festival on July 25th.
It’s become a bit of a summer tradition for me to escape New York for a month or so, and it’s one I always look forward to.
There are a lot of exciting things coming in the next few months for Avant Media and for myself. I’m really excited for a few big announcements and projects that we have in the works.
I hope you will be too.

Sofia was my little assistant and we had a ball!

The Third Mind is on view starting today at The Guggenheim
I attended the opening of this show last night, and it is truly spectacular, and there is a strong musical presence as well, from La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House to scores from the FLUXUS era, to a huge presence of works surrounding John Cage. The inimitable Margaret Leng Tan has done the audio tour and I’m very excited to go back and listen.
There are also a ton of performances and lectures set for the 3 months or so it is open.
Third Mind Performances and Lectures
There is so much amazing art on view during this exhibit that we were literally running at the end of the night to see a full room installation on the top floor that is not to be missed.

In December Ana Baer-Carrillo and I collaborated on Doleo Æternus, an evening-length work for musicians, computer, and video which was presented at the ISIM conference in Denver. This is a long and tumultuous work in the history of Avant Media, and it spans almost the entire duration that Avant Media has been in existence. From our first show in New York City in January of 2007, where we premiered what was then Anger, to our most recent performance, Ana’s work has been a powerful influence on my work and a guiding force keeping me grounded enough in reality to reign in, albeit ever so slightly, my penchant for the extreme. I never got around to making links this Friday – although I saw some fantastic work this weekend: Welcome to Nowhere on Saturday and Siren on Sunday (which was truly spectacular).
Starting today is an interesting video project, Mondays With Merce, that should prove to be interesting as it progresses. I was particularly struck by the music used during teaching, very straightforward and, therefore, surprising (at least to my ears)

I’ve just posted the full length recording of Doleo Æternus on this page: ISIM Recording
The recording turned out quite well, and I want to say a big thank you to all of the performers who played so beautifully.
Take a listen.
