Friday Afternoon Photo Edition

First up, a couple of interesting photo-based blogs i’ve recently come across that show lovely and interesting stuff:

  • OUT HERE OVER THERE
  • hrstudioplus – I particularly enjoyed this post about design.
  • And secondly for a little bit of shameless self-promotion, I’ve recently taken up photography with the delightfully lo-fi Holga camera, and I’m positing the results to my Flickr.

  • Randy Gibson’s top twelve photos on Flickr – some of these are going to become limited-edition prints, we’ll keep you updated.

    New Aqua Madora sample

    Thursday, January 8th, 2009

I’ve just uploaded a new audio sample of Aqua Madora. The video on the page is still from the Permanent Wilting performance with Dani Beauchamp dancing. I’ve added a sample of the “Table” section of the Triplicate performance which was expertly recorded by Mike Rugnetta here.

I’m also including the sample after the jump. here

Over the next couple of months we will be presenting two of our works in unusual ways for us. Next week we are auditioning Shiver for the Fresh Tracks program at DTW. In early December we will present a new version of Anger at the ISIM conference in Denver.

I’m very much used to thinking about our work only within the context of Avant Media and our artists and methodologies. Taking these two works outside of Avant Media (to an extent) has proved enlightening to the nature and concept of our work (more…)

An article in the LA Times today has me thinking about the type of work we are making, and the experience we are trying to create for our audience.

“You no longer market a performance that you sit and look at. What you offer is a complete experience that begins before the performance even starts and may continue afterward.” – John Munger in an article by Mike Boehm, LA Times

The article goes on to talk about non-artistic elements for an evening, as well as familiarity, reality TV, and many other concepts and tactics for attracting audiences. But what I found interesting is how so much of what this article talks about is exactly what we’ve been doing. (more…)

    Looking towards fall

    Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I love this time of year.

Today was the first day that I really started to feel like Fall was upon us. I’m in very serious planning mode these days with a major redesign of this website, a couple of huge audition/application-based opportunities coming up, grant applications, and searching for space for a spring show focusing on text-based work, all on my plate. I have barely had time to be outside at all.

I went to meet Jo today to talk about fundraising, and as I walked up the street ran into a friend of mine who moved to NY right around the same time I did, and who I haven’t seen in probably six years. (more…)

    Time and Motion Study

    Sunday, August 31st, 2008

I’m a couple clock ticks away from shipping off to MA to help out composer Nick Brooke during his Workshop Residency at Mass MoCA. I’ll write more about Nick, his amazing work, and all that other jazz during the residency, but I noticed today Time and Motion Study made it to the front page of the Mass MoCA website. Check out the perma-link to the show page:

I expect to see everyone in MA on Sept. 27th

This week was an intense one fro me: trying to settle down in a new place, getting a car, attending more meetings in 3 days than I did in my whole schooling years and all of that just before starting my 4 courses. This semester I will be teaching 2 levels of ballet, jazz and a choreography class. It’s all pretty exciting, but it was one long week! I am glad to be back home.
