How Anger became Doleo Æternus

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I began working on Anger around the same time that Ana and I started this company. Even though it took us a long time to finally be ready to perform it ( a solid three years after the first notes were written) in many ways it was the first piece that Ana and I worked on after Alicia.

On Friday we will be presenting the next step in the evolution of this piece: Doleo Æternus (more…)

Looking towards fall

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I love this time of year.

Today was the first day that I really started to feel like Fall was upon us. I’m in very serious planning mode these days with a major redesign of this website, a couple of huge audition/application-based opportunities coming up, grant applications, and searching for space for a spring show focusing on text-based work, all on my plate. I have barely had time to be outside at all.

I went to meet Jo today to talk about fundraising, and as I walked up the street ran into a friend of mine who moved to NY right around the same time I did, and who I haven’t seen in probably six years. (more…)

In Search of a New Tuning

Monday, September 8th, 2008

A few years ago I started work on my first proper string quartet – an expansion and fuller exploration of one of the sections of Alicia. The piece was written originally in equal temperament, as the thought of doing a full length work in Just Intonation had simply not crossed my mind.

I “finished” this new version of the piece back in 2005, and really hadn’t looked at it again until earlier this year when we decided to go ahead and produce it in our next season with a video component by Patrick Davison. In revisiting this piece, which I am really excited to have premiered, I realized that I have no desire to continue to use equal temperament, and that now was the time to find a new tuning. (more…)

Changes coming to Avant Media

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

With the start of the 2008-2009 season upon us, many changes are in the works for Avant Media Performance.

Dani Beauchamp and Mike Rugnetta will now officially join Avant Media as Principal Artists. Their talents and creativity are a welcome addition to the core of artists leading the direction Avant Media will be taking in the coming years.

As a part of this new direction, the Principal Artists of the company: Ana, Dani, Mike and myself; will be sharing our experiences, thoughts, ideas, and whatever else strikes our fancy here, in what will become a regularly updated Journal of the activities of Avant Media Performance and its artists. “Anger” Music Rehearsals

Wednesday, November 24th, 2004

The first four-hour music rehearsals for Anger finished today at The Dairy Center for The Arts in Boulder, Colorado with the Violinist Drew Blumberg and Soprano Karie Kerner as well as Randy Gibson on piano. These rehearsals were meant to discover any changes that must be made to the construction of the piece. This was the first time the three had rehearsed together with the computer program. Things went very well, with some minor changes being made. Mr. Blumberg will stay on as the violinist, but Ms. Kerner will be replaced with a different singer, citing time constraints and a stylistic shift in the music.
