on Rehearsal and Revelation

I am now fully into rehearsal mode for the upcoming just intonation world premiere of Doleo Æternus and it’s starting to get extremely interesting. On Sunday I had the first rehearsal with the bassoonist, Annie Lyle, and the computer. This was Annie’s first time hearing the computer and I had really completely forgotten how magical it can be. The Nature of Collaboration

In December Ana Baer-Carrillo and I collaborated on Doleo Æternus, an evening-length work for musicians, computer, and video which was presented at the ISIM conference in Denver. This is a long and tumultuous work in the history of Avant Media, and it spans almost the entire duration that Avant Media has been in existence. From our first show in New York City in January of 2007, where we premiered what was then Anger, to our most recent performance, Ana’s work has been a powerful influence on my work and a guiding force keeping me grounded enough in reality to reign in, albeit ever so slightly, my penchant for the extreme. on Multimedia and Collaboration

An article in the LA Times today has me thinking about the type of work we are making, and the experience we are trying to create for our audience.

“You no longer market a performance that you sit and look at. What you offer is a complete experience that begins before the performance even starts and may continue afterward.” – John Munger in an article by Mike Boehm, LA Times

The article goes on to talk about non-artistic elements for an evening, as well as familiarity, reality TV, and many other concepts and tactics for attracting audiences. But what I found interesting is how so much of what this article talks about is exactly what we’ve been doing. (more…)

Changes coming to Avant Media

With the start of the 2008-2009 season upon us, many changes are in the works for Avant Media Performance.

Dani Beauchamp and Mike Rugnetta will now officially join Avant Media as Principal Artists. Their talents and creativity are a welcome addition to the core of artists leading the direction Avant Media will be taking in the coming years.

As a part of this new direction, the Principal Artists of the company: Ana, Dani, Mike and myself; will be sharing our experiences, thoughts, ideas, and whatever else strikes our fancy here, in what will become a regularly updated Journal of the activities of Avant Media Performance and its artists. Shiver installation in Darmstadt

Shiver the collaboration between Randy Gibson and Oscar Henriquez will receive its European premiere as an installation at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt on Thursday, July 17th during the 44. Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt (IMD) as part of the Nachtclub mit Fenster curated by Manos Tsangaris.

Also being performed is Randy Gibson’s new work Light Study #1 for amplified lighting written specifically for the project.

Chattanooga Masterclass in February

February 6-8, 2008: Avant Media artists Dani Beauchamp and Ana Baer-Carrillo will be teaching a 3 day masterclass at the Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts, a fine arts magnet school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In addition to classes in choreography, videography, and collaboration, the artists will also set a new piece on the Project Motion Dance Ensemble.

2006 Masterclass in Morelia

This fall, Avant Media Performance founders, Ana Baer-Carrillo and Randy Gibson with be teaching a week long masterclass in interdisciplinary and collaborative performance with Dani Beauchamp and Kim Olson of Kim Olson/Sweetedge at the Universidad Michoacana in Morelia, Mexico. “Aqua Madora” part of the Sans Souci Film Festival

Aqua Madora, the new collaboration between Randy Gibson and Ana Baer-Carrillo will have its live world premiere as part of the Sans Souci Film Festival at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art June 5 and 6, 2006.
