Doleo Æternus – a look ahead

Friday, June 19th, 2009

It’s looking more and more like the Just Intonation World Premiere of Doleo Æternus is going to happen in New York this fall. Updates with exact dates and venues will be coming in the coming weeks.

I’m obviously very excited by this fact. So I’m going to do something I don’t normally do, and post an excerpt of the work in-progress.

I’ve been rehearsing with the violinist Drew Blumberg, and we’re going to be putting together a pretty interesting ensemble for this premiere.

Doleo Æternus (Ira into Mador) VI-xiv-2009 16:33:51″ – 16:44:33″ (Brooklyn):

Performers:

  • Randy Gibson: Piano, Organs, Voice
  • Drew Blumberg: Violin
  • Doleo Æternus recording

    Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I’ve just posted the full length recording of Doleo Æternus on this page: ISIM Recording

The recording turned out quite well, and I want to say a big thank you to all of the performers who played so beautifully.

    Take a listen.

    Doleo Æternus Rehearsals

    Friday, December 5th, 2008

I’m sitting in my hotel room in South Denver after a very long day of Rehearsals and general driving insanity. I arrived in Colorado last night and it was snowing, quite intensely.

My rehearsals today with the Playground Ensemble went very well. I always run into the same problem though which is that my work has very subtle cues, and it just takes time. They’re a great ensemble, and it was a pleasure rehearsing with them. I just wish we had one more day. Although I suppose one always wishes one had one more day (wow, that was quite a oneful sentence)

Anyway. I’ve posted a bit of a photojournal after the jump. Images of the rehearsals were taken from a video on my iSight – of course it’s the first time I’m using it, and the sound didn’t record. Oh well,

Enjoy the pictures of snow, horrible donuts, and blurry rehearsals to the gallery »

    How Anger became Doleo Æternus

    Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I began working on Anger around the same time that Ana and I started this company. Even though it took us a long time to finally be ready to perform it ( a solid three years after the first notes were written) in many ways it was the first piece that Ana and I worked on after Alicia.

On Friday we will be presenting the next step in the evolution of this piece: Doleo Æternus (more…)

    Friday Afternoon Links XI-xxviii-2008

    Friday, November 28th, 2008

I am sitting in the Dream House in lower manhattan. A perfect activity for the day after what turned out to be an epic Thanksgiving dinner I cooked last night (11 courses, but more on that later…).

In one week we will be performing the latest version of Anger now called Doleo Æternus written by moi and with a new video shot by Ana Baer-Carrillo and edited by Caren McCaleb at the ISIM Conference in Denver, Colorado. This is extremely exciting for me, but also nerve-racking.

Here is the only link for today.

  • ISIM The Third Annual International Society of Improvised Music Conference will be held next weekend – December 5-7 at the University of Denver. Doleo Æternus will be performed by Randy Gibson, Mike Rugnetta, Amali Premawardhana, and the Playground Ensemble on Friday December 5th at 5PM.
  • Doleo Æternus at the ISIM

    Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

In just over two weeks we will be premiering the new version of Anger at the third annual ISIM Festival in Denver Colorado. This is a major new version of the work, now being called Doleo Æternus. We’re very excited to be going back to our home-town (of sorts) and peforming this piece there. The staff of the ISIM has been extremely helpful, and the soloist: Mike Rugnetta, Amali Premawardhana and Myself; will be joined by members of the University of Denver Playground Ensemble.

The program at ISIM is very large, and as such has only a small space for program notes. My full description of the piece is after the jump. Jump »
