Bloomsday 2009

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I always love Bloomsday, and tend to forget that it’s coming. But each year that it does come around and I remember how profoundly and deeply I love this book.

It is truly the ultimate novel, something for everyone – brilliantly complex, engaging and gorgeous. Joyce had a profound influence on my work, mostly through the early (in my life) lens of John Cage’s utter devotion to Finnegan’s Wake.

I still haven’t made it all the way through Finnegan’s Wake, but I am continually enthralled by Ulysses. Listen to a section of Ulysses after the Jump »

on Bitters, Alchemy and Creativity

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I learned to mix drinks about 9 years ago or so. I’ve been cooking as long as I can remember. I have just ordered a large quantity of esoteric herbs and barks to make this bitters recipe from a bar in San Francisco.

I’ve always loved food and cooking, and mixing drinks is a natural extension of this. I think that a lot of composers are like this. There is a strong similarity between what we do as composers, and what a chef does, or a mixologist. It’s all about finding that perfect balance of flavors or notes that creates something special. Some of my favorite places Not on our blogroll this week – a bit of fashion, a bit of food, a bit of humor, and a bit of politics:

  • The Sartorialist – fashion shots on the street from around the world
  • Always Hungry – just started reading this, but i’m a particular fan of the seasonal ingredients calendar
  • The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” quotation marks – entirely “self explanitory”
  • Princess Sparkle Pony – one of my favorite political blogs for its sheer obsessive spirit

    the Listicle edition

My 5 favorite links from our Blogroll in no particular order:

  • Arts Journal – an amazing portal for arts related news and spectacular blogs by Kyle Gann, Greg Sandow and many more
  • Art Fag City – Paddy Johnson takes a consistently interesting slice of the NY art scene
  • Garfield minus Garfield – I had actually forgotten this was here and was entirely happy to see it once again, removing Garfield (the character) from Garfield (the comic strip) creates gloriously psychotic story lines that are way more compelling than the original
  • Eater – my first stop for everything restaurant and food related – they also have divisions in San Francisco and Los Angeles
  • Anthony Bourdain – consistently entertaining and often heartfelt and cutting at the same time, Bourdain’s blog is a great companion to my favorite food show

    The week in looking ahead.

First off, wow to yesterday’s miraculous plane landing on the Hudson, and to the incredible Chesley Sullenberger.

Looking ahead to the Obama administration in only 4 days!

  • The always inspiring Alice Waters wrote an open letter and it’s finally been published at Gourmet
  • Shepard Fairey figured he couldn’t work in an official capacity with the campaign, I think it turned out pretty well. He was on Colbert last night.
  • Everyone’s getting in on Obamamania via Eater.
  • And finally, Princess Sparkle Pony chronicles the Shoe Art Renaissance. – bonus, she is also the creator of the Bill Richardson Facial Hair Alert System.

The week in things made out of food which shouldn’t be made out of food at all.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays – and Happy New Year. It’s a beautiful snowy day in Brooklyn. I expect I won’t be posting much over the next couple of weeks.

  • Grace Jones cast in Chocolate on CR Blog simply fantastic.
  • Chanel and Louis Vuitton accessories made from Beef Jerky at Urlesque
