Friday Afternoon Links I-xxx-2009 : The Third Mind

Friday, January 30th, 2009

  • The Third Mind is on view starting today at The Guggenheim
  • I attended the opening of this show last night, and it is truly spectacular, and there is a strong musical presence as well, from La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House to scores from the FLUXUS era, to a huge presence of works surrounding John Cage. The inimitable Margaret Leng Tan has done the audio tour and I’m very excited to go back and listen.

There are also a ton of performances and lectures set for the 3 months or so it is open.

  • Third Mind Performances and Lectures
  • There is so much amazing art on view during this exhibit that we were literally running at the end of the night to see a full room installation on the top floor that is not to be missed.

  • and finally:

  • a robotic crab with the head of a cabbage patch doll
simply amazing, and it reminds me of a similar assemblage I made many years ago – although mine spun and shot sparks.

Living in Los Angeles I had forgotten how magnificent walking through a city could be. I spent the last five days in Portland, Oregon walking the city’s various districts, museums, and bridges. It’s a fantastic place. Between Powell Books, the exceptional and clean public transportation, and this great Peruvian drink Sacasahuman I had ordered for me, I was sold pretty early on.

But, what I ended up finding most appealing about the city was the amount of innovative and interesting art happening everywhere. In particular, the Time Based Art festival which was in full swing. In venues all around town, in easy walking distance from one another, the festival billed contemporary installation, dance, music, theater, performance and new media works. My truly wonderful, and as of Saturday married, friend Liz Nalley performed at TBA Tuesday night with tEEtH. Amazing! I highly recommend checking them out.

I was sad to leave Portland. And remain still baffled by the contemporary art scene in LA …..

New Installation during Permanent Wilting in LA

    Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

    City _ M-Y

    a modular performance installation

    Video: Ana Baer-Carrillo
    Sound: Randy Gibson
    Installation/Performance: Joe Talkington

‘Santa Monica Iceman VIII-MMVII’ consists of multiple video projections, infinitely repeatable sound modules and site-specific sculpture.

The video displays a solo performance by Nathan Montgomery of “Zyzygy Butoh” merged though experimental editing techniques with the textures and landscapes of the Maroon Bells in Colorado.

Nathan Montgomery’s performance is an adaptation of his 2004 stage piece, “I am Undone.” His movement (found in the excavation of the body) is an exploration of the raw and immediate physical place that Butoh springs from.

The sound is made up of amplified melting ice, used to trigger specific sound samples set within a forest of small sonic vignettes based on a single fundamental frequency.

The site-specific sculpture and the Butoh-inspired performance by Joe Talkington are influenced by the theme of the night: “Permanent Wilting.”

New short film by Randy Gibson

    Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Shooting was completed today for the new—as of yet untitled—short film by Randy Gibson. Movements by Laine Rettmer were captured on a lightly snowy day in Colorado, and will become the images for two versions of the film. An installation-specific version and a “theatrical” version with plans for a premiere in April 2007.
