I am now fully into rehearsal mode for the upcoming just intonation world premiere of Doleo Æternus and it’s starting to get extremely interesting. On Sunday I had the first rehearsal with the bassoonist, Annie Lyle, and the computer. This was Annie’s first time hearing the computer and I had really completely forgotten how magical it can be. Well everyone, It’s been a long and interesting summer. I posted some of my reflections about my own travels and activities over on my blog. And there’s been quite a lot going on in the Avant Media world as well. In a few weeks we’ll be releasing Voices + Sine Waves (an announcement about the release date is coming very soon) – a collection of my short works as a digital download album. And in November we will be presenting Doleo Æternus in New York City in the Just Intonation World Premiere.
I’m going to do my best to be a little bit more active on the blog and to share with you all the rehearsal and creation process leading up to this major premiere. In the mean time, after the jump, a little bit of Billie. Jump »
It’s looking more and more like the Just Intonation World Premiere of Doleo Æternus is going to happen in New York this fall. Updates with exact dates and venues will be coming in the coming weeks.
I’m obviously very excited by this fact. So I’m going to do something I don’t normally do, and post an excerpt of the work in-progress.
I’ve been rehearsing with the violinist Drew Blumberg, and we’re going to be putting together a pretty interesting ensemble for this premiere.
Doleo Æternus (Ira into Mador) VI-xiv-2009 16:33:51″ – 16:44:33″ (Brooklyn):
Performers:
I began working on Anger around the same time that Ana and I started this company. Even though it took us a long time to finally be ready to perform it ( a solid three years after the first notes were written) in many ways it was the first piece that Ana and I worked on after Alicia.
On Friday we will be presenting the next step in the evolution of this piece: Doleo Æternus (more…)
In just over two weeks we will be premiering the new version of Anger at the third annual ISIM Festival in Denver Colorado. This is a major new version of the work, now being called Doleo Æternus. We’re very excited to be going back to our home-town (of sorts) and peforming this piece there. The staff of the ISIM has been extremely helpful, and the soloist: Mike Rugnetta, Amali Premawardhana and Myself; will be joined by members of the University of Denver Playground Ensemble.
The program at ISIM is very large, and as such has only a small space for program notes. My full description of the piece is after the jump. Jump »
A few years ago I started work on my first proper string quartet – an expansion and fuller exploration of one of the sections of Alicia. The piece was written originally in equal temperament, as the thought of doing a full length work in Just Intonation had simply not crossed my mind.
I “finished” this new version of the piece back in 2005, and really hadn’t looked at it again until earlier this year when we decided to go ahead and produce it in our next season with a video component by Patrick Davison. In revisiting this piece, which I am really excited to have premiered, I realized that I have no desire to continue to use equal temperament, and that now was the time to find a new tuning. (more…)
Shiver the collaboration between Randy Gibson and Oscar Henriquez will receive its European premiere as an installation at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt on Thursday, July 17th during the 44. Also being performed is Randy Gibson’s new work Light Study #1 for amplified lighting written specifically for the project.
