Minimalism in the Rain

Part 1 – The Audience Perspective

On friday night, I attended the huge 800 years of minimalism event at Lincoln Center. Mostly because Mike was going to be playing one of 200 electric guitars in Rhys Chatham’s “A Crimson Grail” which is a truly spectactular piece.

It rained.

Torrentially.

Changes coming to Avant Media

With the start of the 2008-2009 season upon us, many changes are in the works for Avant Media Performance.

Dani Beauchamp and Mike Rugnetta will now officially join Avant Media as Principal Artists. Their talents and creativity are a welcome addition to the core of artists leading the direction Avant Media will be taking in the coming years.

As a part of this new direction, the Principal Artists of the company: Ana, Dani, Mike and myself; will be sharing our experiences, thoughts, ideas, and whatever else strikes our fancy here, in what will become a regularly updated Journal of the activities of Avant Media Performance and its artists. John Cage at 95

In honor of John Cage’s 95th birthday, Avant Media Performance presents an evening of two multimedia realizations of works by John Cage on September 5, 2007. “Four6″ (for any way of producing sounds) will be performed in an electro-acoustic realization featuring Randy Gibson on electronics, Mike Rugnetta on guitar and video by Patrick Davison. The second half of the concert is a true musicircus with “Winter Music,” “Atlas Eclipticalis,” and an actors’ realization by Laine Rettmer of “Song Books” being performed simultaneously. The evening will also see the world premiere of Randy Gibson’s “One Wall – for John Cage” assisted by Mike Rugnetta and Guy Snover.

Bringing together musicians, filmmakers, actors, and technicians, this evening pays tribute to the collaborative and innovative legacy of John Cage.

Performance will take place at The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, NYC.

“Anger” World Premiere

On January 25, 2007 Avant Media presented the world premiere of Anger the pivotal immersion performance with music by Randy Gibson and video by Ana Baer-Carrillo. Additional artists included Alicia Wargo – sculptures and costumes; Oscar Henriquez – video typography; Mike Rugnetta – guitar, banjo and pre-show music; and Laine Rettmer – voice.

The performance, held at 20 Greene in SoHo, NYC, was completely sold out. Thank you to all of our audience members and supporters who came out for this one-night-only event. This is sure to be a piece that will continue its evolution and become on of Avant Media’s signature performances. Plans are already in the works for expanded video sections and further musical development.

“Anger” World Premiere

Anger, by Randy Gibson and Ana Baer-Carrillo, will have its world premiere on January 25, 2007 at 20 Greene in SoHo, New York. Performance will begin at 8pm, followed by a reception with the artists.

Music will be performed live by Randy Gibson (Piano, Crotales), Mike Rugnetta (Guitar, Banjo) and Laine Rettmer (Voice). Augmenting the live music will be four channels of continuous video by Ana Baer-Carrillo projected on the performers and surrounding the audience, alongside sculpture and costumes by Alicia Wargo.

Tickets will be available for sale from Dec. 1, 2006, check back soon for more information.

New score for “Jetta”

Jetta, the dance and spoken word performance by Dani Beauchamp, with video by Ana Baer-Carrillo, will be rescored by Mike Rugnetta and Randy Gibson. The new version of “Jetta” will receive its premiere in Morelia, Mexico, October 25, 2006.
