No Einstein?? I has a sad.

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I’m thoroughly disheartened by the news of Gerard Mortier leaving City Opera. And it’s seeming more and more that his departure means we’re losing what was really going to be an interesting season and future.

Of course, I was most looking forward to the revival of Einstein on The Beach which he had planned. This is a piece I’ve been obsessed about since I first heard snippets of it years ago in the interdisciplinary performance class where I met Ana.

But Mortier’s decision to leave is bigger than just one piece. (more…)

A night of minimalism and belgian dance

Rosas at BAMLast night I went to see Rosas Danst Rosas, or significantly less elegantly: Steve Reich Evening, at BAM. The program had a lot going for it, and for the most part it completely delivered.

The program contained two pieces I have heard of and knew well, but had never actually heard: Pendulum Music by Steve Reich and Poème Symphonique pour cent Métronomes by Györgi Ligeti (a Ligeti piece on Steve Reich Evening admittedly a bit odd, but it works as a really nice precursor to drumming). Pendulum Music opened the evening, and it was a beautiful realization with two speakers in a nice beating interval. In Search of a New Tuning

Monday, September 8th, 2008

A few years ago I started work on my first proper string quartet – an expansion and fuller exploration of one of the sections of Alicia. The piece was written originally in equal temperament, as the thought of doing a full length work in Just Intonation had simply not crossed my mind.

I “finished” this new version of the piece back in 2005, and really hadn’t looked at it again until earlier this year when we decided to go ahead and produce it in our next season with a video component by Patrick Davison. In revisiting this piece, which I am really excited to have premiered, I realized that I have no desire to continue to use equal temperament, and that now was the time to find a new tuning. (more…)

Time and Motion Study

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

I’m a couple clock ticks away from shipping off to MA to help out composer Nick Brooke during his Workshop Residency at Mass MoCA. I’ll write more about Nick, his amazing work, and all that other jazz during the residency, but I noticed today Time and Motion Study made it to the front page of the Mass MoCA website. Check out the perma-link to the show page:

I expect to see everyone in MA on Sept. 27th
