Laine Rettmer

Laine Rettmer is an opera director and actor. She is currently the resident stage director for Loft Opera, a New York based company that creates full scale classical operas with immersive and contemporary stagings. Rettmer's production of La Boheme played a sold out run and was called, "Triumphant... a performance that is as true and moving as any I can remember in 40 years of opera-going," by the New York Observer. Previous opera associate and assistant director credits include Powder Her Face which opened New York City Opera's last season at BAM and Evan Ziporyn's opera A House in Bali which premiered at Berkley Rep and toured to Boston and BAM. She has collaborated with the theater and opera director, Jay Scheib, for the past six years on twelve productions. Like Scheib, Rettmer strives to force narratives and librettos to contend with the problems of modernity and feminism. For the fall of 2014 she is stage directing a concert for the singer Joyce DiDonato in Brooklyn and Rossini’s Barbiere for Loft Opera. In spring 2015 she will be directing Bizet's Carmen for Loft Opera.
